WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF LEVITRA?
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Levitra® (vardenafil HCL). These side effects are generally mild to moderate in nature, and usually go away within a few hours of use.
However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it well. If side effects do occur, they are usually minor, meaning they require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. In research studies, up to 3.4 percent of people stopped taking Levitra because of side effects.
LEVITRA helps most men with erectile dysfunction, but it may have unwanted side effects. Sometimes they are serious, most of the time they are not. You may need to stop taking the tablets or have medical treatment if you get some of the serious side effects.
Levitra was administered to over 4430 men (mean age 56, range 18-89 years; 81% White, 6% Black, 2% Asian, 2% Hispanic and 9% Other) during controlled and uncontrolled clinical trials worldwide. Over 2200 patients were treated for 6 months or longer, and 880 patients were treated for at least 1 year.
In placebo-controlled clinical trials, the discontinuation rate due to adverse events was 3.4% for Levitra compared to 1.1% for placebo.
In these studies, side effects occurring in a group of people taking the drug are always documented and compared to the side effects that occur in a similar group of people not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
LEVITRA may uncommonly cause:
- an erection that won’t go away (priapism). If you get an erection that lasts more than 4 hours, get medical help right away. Priapism must be treated as soon as possible or lasting damage can happen to your penis including the inability to have erections.
- color vision changes, such as seeing a blue tinge to objects or having difficulty telling the difference between the colors blue and green.
- In rare instances, men taking PDE5 inhibitors (oral erectile dysfunction medicines, including LEVITRA) reported a sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes. It is not possible to determine whether these events are related directly to these medicines, to other factors such as high blood pressure or diabetes, or to a combination of these. If you experience sudden decrease or loss of vision, stop taking PDE5 inhibitors, including LEVITRA, and call a doctor right away.
- Sudden loss or decrease in hearing, sometimes with ringing in the ears and dizziness, has been rarely reported in people taking PDE5 inhibitors, including LEVITRA. It is not possible to determine whether these events are related directly to the PDE5 inhibitors, to other diseases or medications, to other factors, or to a combination of factors. If you experience these symptoms, stop taking LEVITRA and contact a doctor right away.
You may experience some or none of the side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have side effects from a medicine that you have never tried. Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking this drug. Also, let your healthcare provider know if you develop something that "just does not seem right." While it may not be a Levitra side effect, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
